Job Description

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Hot Work Coordinator to support U.S. Navy ship repair and modernization projects in Norfolk, VA. This position plays a critical role in coordinating, tracking, and managing hot work activities to ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with shipyard procedures and government regulations.

The ideal candidate will have maritime industry experience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work closely with project teams, subcontractors, shipyard personnel, and Navy representatives to coordinate daily hot work operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and process daily hot work authorization requests for ship repair and modernization projects.
  • Review, track, and maintain hot work logs and permit documentation.
  • Verify the start and completion of authorized hot work with designated shipyard personnel.
  • Coordinate daily meetings with project teams, repair activities, and customer representatives to identify and resolve hot work conflicts.
  • Monitor hot work activities to ensure they align with production schedules and operational priorities.
  • Track the number of active permits to ensure compliance with established shipyard procedures.
  • Process permit revisions as required before work begins.
  • Prepare and submit weekly reports summarizing:
    • Number of permits submitted
    • Number of permits executed
    • Permit completion percentages
    • Reasons for unexecuted permits
    • Two-week forecast of upcoming hot work activities
  • Maintain awareness of production schedules to prevent conflicts with restricted operations such as fueling, ammunition transfers, or other critical shipboard activities.
  • Coordinate with safety personnel to resolve discrepancies involving hot work permits.
  • Participate in fire safety meetings and support resolution of hot work deviations when required.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 2 years of maritime, shipyard, or industrial maintenance experience.
  • Experience supporting Navy ship repair or shipyard operations is highly preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate between multiple departments and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Preferred Certifications

  • OSHA Maritime 10-Hour Certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
  • Shipyard Competent Person Training (24-Hour and Annual 8-Hour Refresher) preferred but not required

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work aboard vessels, in shipyards, and in industrial environments.
  • Comfortable climbing ladders, crawling, bending, lifting, and working in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, rain, and wind.
  • Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain DBIDS access.
  • Must be able to work in a safety-sensitive environment while following all shipyard and customer safety regulations.
