Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Tank Department Supervisor to lead the daily operations of a busy ship repair facility supporting commercial and government vessel repair projects. This leadership role is responsible for supervising personnel, coordinating vessel tank cleaning operations, supporting drydocking activities, maintaining department equipment, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

The Tank Department plays a critical role in supporting ship repair production throughout the facility, including operations on the graving dock, mobile boat hauler, wet berths, and pier spaces. This position oversees a team of experienced laborers and helpers while working closely with Project Managers, Production, and other trade supervisors to meet project schedules and customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of Tank Department personnel in support of drydocking and ship repair operations.
  • Assign work based on project priorities while maximizing productivity, safety, and efficiency.
  • Review work specifications, drawings, and project requirements to develop effective work plans.
  • Prepare detailed condition reports documenting completed work and vessel conditions for customer review.
  • Coordinate vessel tank cleaning and related operations with Project Managers and other production departments.
  • Provide hands-on leadership by monitoring work in progress, resolving issues, and ensuring quality workmanship.
  • Oversee the maintenance, inspection, inventory, and repair of department equipment, including pumps, hoses, pressure washers, fittings, and related tools.
  • Order consumables, replacement parts, and materials necessary to support department operations.
  • Prepare and submit daily manpower reports, work progress reports, and labor hour documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, customer requirements, OSHA regulations, and all applicable safety procedures.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by enforcing proper PPE usage and safe work practices throughout the department.

Qualifications

  • Previous supervisory experience in a shipyard, marine repair, or industrial environment required.
  • Experience with vessel tank cleaning, confined space operations, or marine support services strongly preferred.
  • Vessel Competent Person (VCP) certification preferred.
  • OSHA safety training or equivalent worksite safety certification preferred.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Microsoft Project.
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and overtime as required to support production schedules.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to work in an active shipyard environment with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Must be capable of climbing ladders, walking long distances, and working in confined spaces when required.
  • Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respirators, hard hats, eye protection, gloves, and steel-toe safety footwear.
  • Must be able to safely perform the physical demands associated with ship repair operations.
