Position Summary: St. Johns Shipbuilding is currently seeking a diligent Ship Fitter to construct, assemble, and repair large ship structural sections within our shipyard located in Palatka, FL. With a focus on quality and efficiency, the Ship Fitter will be an integral part of our team, ensuring that each vessel meets our rigorous standards for integrity and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Read and interpret ship design blueprints to determine the layout and assembly of hulls, bulkheads, and other structural components.
- Measure, cut, shape, and align metal plates and frames, utilizing welding and fabrication techniques to assemble structures.
- Collaborate with other trade specialists, including welders and pipefitters, to ensure proper integration of all ship components.
- Conduct fit-up checks and make adjustments to ensure adherence to build specifications.
- Follow all shipyard safety protocols, especially when operating heavy machinery or working in potentially hazardous conditions.

Experience Required: The position requires a candidate with significant experience as a Ship Fitter or in a similar role. Knowledge of ship construction methods, fabrication techniques, and proficiency in the use of related tools and equipment is essential.

We are located on the Southeast Coast with excellent access to all of the Mid Atlantic and New England as well as the Caribbean and Gulf Coast. Our facility sits on a beautiful, partially wooded site along the St. Johns River in Putnam County, Florida approximately 68 miles south of Jacksonville, Fla., at marker 31. The St. Johns River is easily accessible to the Intracoastal Waterway and open to the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville, Florida.
We offer a 850 ton dry dock, a crane capacity of 500 tons, 2,400 feet of water frontage with over 900 feet of bulkhead including a 400-ft launch basin, two rail launch systems, a 425-ft by 75-ft fabrication shop as well as complete carpentry, electrical and machine shops.
