Ship Fitter

Position Summary: St. Johns Shipbuilding seeks a proficient Ship Fitter to join our growing team and contribute to our marine vessel construction and repair initiatives in Palatka, FL. As an integral part of our shipyard crew, the Ship Fitter will specialize in the complex fabrication and assembly of ship structures, executing tasks with precision and ensuring that each fitted piece adheres to exact design specifications and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Accurately read and interpret detailed blueprints and technical drawings to determine the specifications for structural components of ships.
• Perform precise measurements and layouts on metal materials, shaping and fabricating parts to exact dimensions.
• Utilize a broad range of tools, such as cutting torches, grinders, drills, and welding equipment to cut and assemble parts.
• Align and secure various structural elements to build subsections of vessels, including the framing, hull, and bulkheads.
• Work in unison with welders, pipefitters, and other specialized tradespeople to ensure seamless integration of systems and structures.
• Conduct rigorous checks on fitted structures to confirm alignment, accuracy, and robustness, making adjustments as necessary to correct any discrepancies.
• Fulfill duties with a steadfast commitment to safety protocols, actively participating in safety briefings and maintaining a clean and orderly workspace.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

• Demonstrated experience and mastery in ship fitting tasks, with a thorough understanding of the marine construction processes.
• Adept at interpreting intricate blueprints and performing precise mathematical calculations for material layout.
• Proven track record of efficiently using a variety of hand and power tools for structural fabrication and assembly.
• Experience with welding and metal cutting processes, exhibiting strong craftsmanship and technical aptitude.
• Excellent problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to rectify structural assembly issues swiftly.

Experience Required: Candidates should possess extensive hands-on experience in ship fitting, with a focus on marine vessel construction and repair. Experience in a similar industrial fabrication setting will be considered. Formal training or certifications in ship fitting or metalworking trades are highly valued.
