Job Description

Position Summary: Austal USA, situated in Mobile, AL, is looking for a highly skilled A-Class Structural Fitter. The role involves performing tasks such as layout, fabrication, and fitting of aluminum/steel components, modules, and vessels for ship construction with minimal supervision. The Structural Fitter must have advanced knowledge of engineering drawings, sketches, and knowledge of ship structure and terminology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute tasks proficiently related to equipment operation, work processes, and maintain accountability for work assignments.
  • Comply with quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations.
  • Perform safe and effective usage of craft-related tools and equipment, including GMAW ABS ‘B’ Class Weld Certification requirements for steel or aluminum applications.
  • Operate with minimal supervision in the layout, fabrication, and fitting of structural elements.
  • Willing to work and train less-experienced workers and perform tasks outside standard craft requirements.
  • Work in compliance with NAVSEA STD Items and may be required to travel to off-site work locations.

Qualifications / Knowledge / Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year as a B-Class Fitter at Austal or 2 years in related industry required.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment, work processes, and techniques used in fitting.
  • Ability to understand and interpret construction drawings and specifications.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must stand, walk, handle, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, hear, and occasionally sit.
  • Ability to handle physical requirements, including lifting, climbing, and working at heights or in confined spaces.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to humid conditions, moving parts, heights, extreme heat, and potentially toxic chemicals.

  • Strict compliance with safety and environmental rules and regulations is required.

Compensation: $33.36 per hour
