Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA, is seeking a Shipfitter - Journeyman proficient in new ship construction and repair tasks. The candidate will be responsible for shipfitting, burning, certified plate welding, chipping, and structural layout with minimal supervision. The role requires prior experience or training and the ability to perform precision work involving trigonometry, product design, metal properties, and shop machinery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform journeyman-level shipfitting, welding, burning, and other fabrication tasks complying with specifications.
  • Cut, grind, groove, scarf, and trim metal to dimension, contour, or specified level as required.
  • Fabricate metal structural parts, align them accurately, and secure parts into position.
  • Occasional tasks may be assigned relevant to the trade.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience or training in shipfitting, certified plate welding, and structural layout.
  • Familiar with trigonometry, product design, metal properties, and shop machinery.
  • Able to conduct precision work and lift heavy materials and equipment.
  • Capable of working at heights, in confined spaces, and adaptable to any shift.
  • Comprehension of written and verbal instructions in English is mandatory.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent working across shipyard areas requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and climbing.
  • Regularly lifting/carrying weights between 50 and 75 lbs unassisted.
  • Maintain safety awareness with the ability to hear warning signals and comprehend safety instructions.
