Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA, is seeking an Abrasive Blaster to prepare metal surfaces for painting or further processing. The role involves propelling abrasive materials against surfaces under high pressure to create the desired surface texture, remove contaminants, and strip away scale, paint, or rust. Work will take place at various sites, including on ships, the blast and paint facility, or the paint pit, often using air feed respirators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install protective masking and containment systems for blasting operations.
  • Set up and operate abrasive blast equipment to achieve specified cleanliness.
  • Operate and maintain dust collection systems.
  • Perform abrasive blast surface preparation and manage blast media recovery.
  • Clean the surface thoroughly prior to coating application as needed.

Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years experience in abrasive blasting or SSPC C-7 Certification.
  • Knowledge in surface preparation procedures and ability to operate abrasive blasting equipment.
  • Experience operating high-reaching equipment is required.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, across all shifts, and to comprehend safety instructions in English.

Physical/Mental Involvement:

  • Lifting items up to 50 lbs and controlling blasting equipment at pressures up to 140 psi.
  • Ability to wear multi-layered clothing and respiratory equipment for prolonged periods.
  • Frequent standing, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and manual dexterity.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to abrasive materials, airborne dust, toxic chemicals, varying temperatures, and noisy environments.
  • Working in shipyard, on-board ships, and in areas with low ventilation.
