Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in Norfolk, VA, has an exciting opportunity in the Rigging department for Riggers across levels J1 to J4. The Riggers will be responsible for fabricating, installing, and repairing rigging and weight-handling gear on ships, moving heavy machinery and equipment, assisting in ship dry-docking operations, and working in various ship environments such as engine rooms, boiler rooms, and confined spaces.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attach hoists and pulling gear to lift, move, and position heavy loads aboard ships.
  • Select and attach appropriate lifting devices based on load types.
  • Direct crane or other equipment movements to maneuver heavy loads.
  • Lay out and handle lines during ship dry docking operations.
  • Install or repair ships’ rigging and weight handling equipment.
  • Operate various tools, forklifts, and aerial lifts as per the level of expertise.
  • Work in various ship areas, often in engine rooms, boiler rooms, aloft, or confined spaces.

Qualifications:

  • Journeyperson 4: Thorough knowledge of rigging gear, OSHA standards, operation of forklifts and aerial lifts, and ability to splice ropes.
  • Journeyperson 3: Working knowledge of OSHA standards and basic rigging operations.
  • Journeyperson 2: Knowledge of rigging gear and operations, ability to operate forklifts and aerial lifts.
  • Journeyperson 1: Assist in basic rigging tasks and operate hand tools.

Physical/Mental Involvement:

  • Must be able to work at heights, in confined spaces, and handle multiple tasks requiring physical strength and endurance.
