Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA, is seeking a Welder - Journeyman to join their workforce. This skilled individual will weld shell plating and various components following specifications for construction and assembly of ships, tanks, and other structural forms. The role requires a person experienced in gas shielded FCAW welding processes and knowledgeable about the welding characteristics of metal. The position mandates availability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and across different shifts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute welding tasks as per specifications for the fabrication of vessels and structural assemblies.
  • Utilize carbon electrodes for cutting, shaping, and grooving metal.
  • Prepare work areas for welding processes, which may include cleaning or preheating.
  • Inspect weld sizes and weld beads; perform essential cleaning tasks and scrap disposal.
  • Additional job duties as required, pertinent to the trade.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience or training in welding is required.
  • Must qualify in two gas shielded FCAW welding processes: 71T-1 and 811N3, in three positions.
  • Ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Required hearing acuity to recognize warning signals and comprehend safety instructions.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent lifting of welding equipment; candidate must be comfortable with standing, climbing, reaching, operating manual tools, and working in various physical positions as needed.
  • Must be able to work across all areas of the shipyard and on board ships with exposure to various environmental conditions that could lead to discomfort or respiratory difficulties.
  • The work area may have constantly moving machinery and high noise levels.
