Job Description
Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO is seeking a Fitter/Ship for their San Diego, CA location. The Fitter/Ship assembles, cuts, grinds metal structural parts, aligns them, and welds foundation and structural members. The individual must be capable of performing layout work in accordance with blueprints, installing temporary fasteners, operating high-reaching equipment, and maintaining safety and cleanliness in work areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Layout work from blueprints.
- Cut, burn, grind, and fit metal structural parts for placement on the ship.
- Tack and weld foundation and structural members.
- Operate equipment such as condors, sky climbers, and scissor lifts.
- Set up tools and equipment at the job site and manage scrap disposal.
- Operate overhead cranes and use rigging equipment.
- Perform additional tasks relevant to the trade as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years of on-the-job experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology, and different metals.
- Good burning, welding, and craftsmanship skills.
- Mechanical ability preferred.
- T-1 welding certificate required for FCAW, SMAW optional but highly recommended.
- Must pass NASSCO's hands-on assessment test.
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and on any assigned shift.
- Must comprehend written and verbal instructions in English.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, walking, climbing, reaching, manual dexterity, and working in various physical positions as needed.
- Exposure to fumes, dust, varying climates and temperatures, and high levels of noise.
