Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in Norfolk, VA, is looking for an experienced Naval Architect to join the Engineering department. The Naval Architect will provide essential engineering support for ship repair projects across various sites. The role involves communicating and coordinating with trades, planning functions, and project teams, and demands a high level of specialized knowledge in naval architecture. The successful candidate will be engaged in designing dry dock block arrangements, preparing mooring plans, and supporting maintenance and repair work for infrastructure and dock equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct stability and dry dock block loading analysis to support U.S. Navy vessel docking.
  • Design dry dock block arrangements and detailed mooring layouts to comply with heavy weather requirements.
  • Develop line handling drawings for vessel movements and prepare pumping plans.
  • Provide technical guidance for dry dock, facility infrastructure, and equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Assist in structural and mechanical design and calculations for various projects.
  • Support technical issues resolution for production and planning stages and develop engineering documents using CAD software.

Qualifications:

  • ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture is required.
  • PE License and FEA Certificate/experience are desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years of shipboard repair experience in a shipyard or familiarity with ship systems operation.
  • Competent in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office applications, and U.S. Navy ship maintenance processes.
  • Strong technical writing skills and effective communication abilities.

Physical Demands:

  • Requires the ability to climb, walk, and potentially access confined spaces aboard vessels.
  • Must have the visual acuity for tasks within arm's reach or of a non-repetitive nature.
