Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA, is looking for a Pipe Welder skilled in various welding techniques and knowledgeable about welding procedures and equipment. The welder will work on a range of metal surfaces or pipes, joining shell plating and other structural assemblies as per specifications. The role includes preparing worksites, tacking, and welding pipes, as well as maintaining general housekeeping and safety standards within the work area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up welding equipment and supplies at the job site.
  • Perform cutting and burning on pipes or penetrations as required.
  • Execute tacking and welding tasks on pipes following specified procedures.
  • Clean weld areas, manage scrap materials, and ensure the cleanliness and order of the work environment.
  • Comply with all safety, quality, and process improvement meetings and protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years of welding experience with proficiency in flat, vertical, overhead, and horizontal arc SMAW and flux-core, and TIG welding, including air arc skills.
  • Must pass NASSCO’s plate and 6G restricted fixed position pipe test using FCAW and GTAW processes.
  • Certification in operating high-reaching equipment is required.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and available to work any shift.
  • Must be fluent in English with strong comprehension of verbal and written instructions.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent lifting of welding equipment and continuous standing, walking, climbing, and working in various physical positions.
  • The position involves working across all shipyard areas and on-board ships, with exposure to fumes, odors, dust, and varying environmental conditions.
  • Must have color vision and be capable of maintaining awareness of common safety hazards in the work area.
