Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA, is seeking an Outside Machinist for new construction projects who will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing ships' propulsion systems and auxiliary components. The right candidate will have experience with various types of propulsion, including steam, turbine, electrical, and diesel systems, as well as working knowledge of rudders, steering gear, elevators, and Navy UNREP systems. This hands-on role requires a thorough understanding of ship fluid systems and proficiency in the use of precision measurement tools and portable machining tools.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, technical manuals, hydraulic, and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Assemble and install complex mechanical systems, ensuring proper alignment and operation.
  • Use precision measurement tools and understand imperial and metric measurement systems.
  • Apply shop mathematics skills, including geometry, trigonometry, decimals, and fractions.
  • Maintain constant safety awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Utilize hand, power, and portable machining tools safely and effectively.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience, or education from a Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training school, or experience in equivalent Navy ratings.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, and the ability to understand safety instructions and regulations.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs, climbing, reaching, manual dexterity, and occasional confined space entry.
  • The role demands working in all shipyard areas and onboard ships with potential exposure to fumes, odors, dust, and various environmental factors that can cause discomfort or respiratory difficulties.
  • Candidates must have color vision.

Reporting: Reports directly to the Assistant Manager of the Thin Plate Panel Line.

Experience Required: 3+ years in a related field or graduate of an applicable training school; relevant Navy experience in MM (BT), AD, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR rates can substitute for professional experience.
