Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO is searching for an experienced Outside Machinist for ship repair operations at its San Diego, CA location. The Outside Machinist will install, maintain, and repair ship propulsion systems, auxiliary systems, and fluid systems, which may include steam, turbine, electrical, and diesel propulsion, rudders, steering gear, elevators, and various other components. The role includes testing equipment for specification compliance, installing shop equipment, and performing tasks as required for ship maintenance and repair.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings and technical manuals.
  • Understand hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Assemble and install complex mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Utilize precision measurement tools with an understanding of imperial and metric systems.
  • Apply shop mathematics, geometry, trigonometry, and work with decimals and fractions.
  • Maintain safety awareness and operate hand, power, and portable machining tools safely.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a relevant field or technical school training.
  • Proficiency in reading hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Familiarity with precision measurement tools and shop mathematics.
  • Strong safety awareness and ability to use various tools.
  • Color vision is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, reach, push, pull, kneel, bend, and occasionally work in confined spaces.
  • Work in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships with exposure to fumes, odors, dust, chemicals, varying temperatures, and high noise levels.
  • Must be capable of standing, balancing, walking, and working in awkward positions or postures.

Reporting: Reports directly to the Assistant Manager of the Thin Plate Panel Line.

Experience Required: Minimum three years of relevant experience or appropriate technical training; naval MM (BT), AD, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR or similar ratings may qualify.

Pay Range: $34.43 - $37.78 per hour
