Hull Engineering Intern (Summer 2026)

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO is offering a Summer engineering internship program that provides candidates with practical experience in an engineering department aligned with their academic curriculum and prior experience. Interns will be assigned to an engineering group in San Diego, CA, where they will engage in projects ranging from initial vessel design to the final outfitting of ships. Interns can expect to spend time in both an office and a manufacturing environment, working alongside experienced naval architects and marine engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist naval architects and marine engineers with ongoing projects.
• Create and modify CAD drawings, conduct research, and perform stability and structural calculations.
• Support shipboard inspections and testing with senior naval architects.
• Regularly report to department managers or supervisors on the status of assigned projects.

Qualifications:

• Must be currently enrolled full-time in a relevant academic program.
• Interest or prior work experience in ship design, shipbuilding, construction management, or manufacturing processes is beneficial.
• Proficient in PC word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, and CAD/CAE systems.
• Strong oral and written communication skills along with personal flexibility are required.

Position Demands:

• Work involves both office and industrial settings, requiring the ability to work on a computer and operate standard office equipment.
• Must be able to access, navigate, and traverse the shipyard, ships, and other production areas, and respond to potential hazards or unexpected obstacles.
• Ascend and descend stairs and ladders, work on scaffolding at heights, and transit through narrow, confined, or congested spaces.
• Exposure to industrial areas with hazardous materials, loud noises, dust, fumes, and outdoor weather conditions.
