Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA is seeking a Robotic Hybrid Laser Welding Engineer for the Production department. This individual will be responsible for managing operations related to robotic/hybrid laser welding, which includes programming, maintenance, inspections, and ensuring compliance with quality control procedures. The position requires an individual with expertise in welding, electrical systems, computer programming, and personnel management. The candidate will work directly under the Assistant Manager of the Thin Plate Panel Line and liaise with various departments, vendors, and regulatory bodies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage robotic/hybrid laser welding operations, including programming, daily maintenance, inspections, and quality assurance.
  • Lead programs, systems, and techniques related to welding operations.
  • Ensure accurate robotic/hybrid laser welding documentation and compliance with quality control procedures.
  • Liaise with customers, classification societies, and military agencies to resolve welding and fabrication issues.
  • Develop and implement welding techniques and qualify weld procedures for specific applications.
  • Supervise and coordinate work among various trades as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Welding, Manufacturing, or a similar field with minimum 2 years’ experience as an Operating Robotics Technician, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Certification as an AWS Robotic Arc or Hybrid Laser Arc Operator is required.
  • Knowledge of welding processes, equipment, filler materials, and NDT methods.
  • Proficiency with the Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) process and experience with Hybrid Laser Arc Welding systems are preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work takes place in both outdoor shipyard and office settings.
  • The role requires good vision, manual dexterity, and the ability to focus, as well as distinguishing color.
  • Must be able to commute within shipyard areas, including navigating through confined and congested spaces.
  • Physical activities include ascending/descending stairs or ladders and transiting on uneven surfaces.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, and moderate to loud noise levels in the production environment.

Reporting: Reports directly to the Assistant Manager of the Thin Plate Panel Line.

Pay Scale: Level I: $74,500 - $97,500 Level II: $83,400 - $118,200 Level III: $112,200 - $145,200
