Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA is seeking a Material Estimator for the Repair department. This position requires the individual to conduct in-depth material requirements analysis for ship repair and modernization projects. The role involves reviewing work specifications, identifying long-lead time items, estimating costs, and soliciting pricing from suppliers. The Material Estimator will contribute to creating competitive bids while identifying potential risks concerning material prices, lead times, and other related concerns.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and analyze requirements from specifications, drawings, and technical references.
  • Understand shipboard components, systems, and materials for estimation purposes.
  • Utilize computer tools and software such as search engines and MS Office for material analysis.
  • Identify critical elements within materials relating to costs, lead times, and overall project risk.
  • Collaborate with suppliers for pricing and material availability inquiries.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate with at least two years of direct experience in materials analysis.
  • Knowledgeable in ship repair materials and shipboard nomenclature.
  • Ability to make decisions based on interpretation of work item specifications.
  • Skillful in using computer systems for material estimation and bid development.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Capable of moving around ships, including navigating stairs, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Must have good vision abilities (close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment).
  • Occasional exposure to dust, welding and burning fumes, smoke, and moderate noise levels.

Reporting: Reports to the Supervisor of Repair Estimating Operations.
