Job Description
Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO, located in Norfolk, VA, has an opening in the Lagging department for an Insulator. This role requires proficiency in various levels of insulation application, including the design and fabrication of lagging pads, installation on various ship systems, and understanding of appropriate materials for specific insulation tasks. The candidate should be adept at reading and interpreting insulation drawings and knowledgeable about ship nomenclature.
Key Responsibilities:
- Read and interpret insulation drawings and complete layout and installation.
- Design and fabricate lagging pads for various ship components and systems.
- Install lagging pads on pipe flanges, valves, ventilation systems, and engine exhaust systems.
- Create and fit miters out of calcium silicate and install on steam systems.
- Apply finishing cement on calcium silicate seams.
- Assist in laying out overhead and bulkhead structures with waffle back studs.
- Install rubber sheet, tube rubber, and fiberglass pipe covering on steam and chill water systems.
- Provide support with advanced insulating tasks, understanding correct material use.
- Adhere to safety regulations and proper personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
Qualifications:
- Journeyperson 1 through 4 levels require increasing degrees of experience and expertise in Insulation Mechanics.
- Ability to navigate vessels using ship nomenclature skillfully.
- Proficiency with basic insulation tools and measuring tape.
- Knowledge of standard items 009-11, 009-23, 009-10 for higher journeyperson levels.
- Comprehension of safety, proper PPE, and ability to work safely.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Capability to work on constructions sites, including ship compartments, overhead structures, and confined spaces.
- Use of personal protective equipment is mandatory.
- May be required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in alignment with safety protocols.
