Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO, located in Norfolk, VA, is searching for diligent Estimators to join the Estimating department. The estimators will develop comprehensive labor, material, and equipment estimates for shipboard and shop work on Government and Commercial vessels. They will be responsible for using drawings, specifications, and on-site checks to identify possible interference and access issues and for soliciting and evaluating price quotations from subcontractors. Pipefitting experience is considered a plus for this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop accurate estimates of costs, encompassing labor, materials, and equipment, for work to be performed.
  • Comply with Estimating Department standards and policies, providing necessary feedback to improve these standards.
  • Participate in job site inspections and ship checks for technical verification.
  • Prepare and submit requisitions for subcontracts and equipment rentals.
  • Interface with various departments, subcontractors, vendors, and clients throughout the estimating process.
  • Prepare work breakdown structures and ensure alignment with execution approach, project, and production management needs.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in a related field, AA/AS with 2 years of experience, or 6 years of directly related experience.
  • In-depth familiarity with fleet maintenance procedures and the ability to read technical drawings.
  • Understanding of ship systems, equipment, labor, and material costs.
  • Computer proficiency to assist in estimate preparation and bid formatting.
  • Effective communication skills and capability to work on offsite locations when necessary.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to commute to various shipyard areas, including climbing ladders and moving through confined spaces.
  • Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle objects, and effectively communicate.
  • Must be prepared to work in a naval-ship-work-environment, which may involve working aboard vessels, in dry docks, and wearing personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to perform in both moderate indoor noise levels and more noisy outdoor shipyard environments.

Reporting: Reports to the Estimating Supervisor, with no direct reports but interacts with other estimators, schedulers, and production supervisors.

Experience Required: Experience in estimating, particularly with a focus on Navy and Military Sealift Command fleet maintenance, is preferred. Pipefitting experience is a plus.

Additional Instructions: Candidates must be able to travel, have reliable transportation, and obtain necessary security clearances. They must be able to transit all facility areas and work overtime as required. Regular, reliable on-site attendance is crucial for this position.
