Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in Norfolk, VA, is currently offering an opportunity for an Area Manager 1 with CVN experience to join our Programs department. The Area Manager 1 oversees the management of multiple complex work items from the developmental planning phase through to completion and delivery of the ship to the customer. This role requires a deep understanding of both combatant and non-combatant vessels, with responsibilities including managing schedules, cost impacts, subcontractors, and ensuring organic trade activities are accomplished efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple work items from the planning phase to completion and delivery.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and trades to achieve schedule objectives.
  • Represent the company and serve as the point of contact for assigned work items with customers.
  • Contribute to project management processes and support project implementation.
  • Assist in developing project proposals, estimates, and schedules.
  • Facilitate cross-functional team meetings with company personnel, subcontractors, and customers.
  • Monitor and develop detailed plans for complex work items.
  • Identify changes in work scope and coordinate with relevant departments for necessary adjustments.
  • Evaluate risks and issues that may affect project success and develop resolutions.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Engineering, Computer Science, Science or related field, or AA/AS plus 2 years of experience, or 4 years of directly related experience.
  • Preferred: Shipboard repair experience within a Public or Private shipyard or prior military experience in a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Capable of wearing personal protective equipment, including a respirator.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with reliable, insurable transportation.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk, lift, pull, and go on vessels.
  • Required to sit, use hands, handle objects, listen and communicate effectively.
  • Good eye/hand coordination and the capacity for close visual work.
  • Familiarity with a naval-ship-work-environment is essential.

Reporting: Reports to the assigned Ship Manager or Lead Manager for the project.

Experience Required: Preferred prior shipboard repair experience or military experience in engineering or related field. Must have experience managing technical personnel and activities in shipboard availabilities.

Additional Instructions: On-site attendance is vital, willingness to travel and manage duties in remote locations for extended periods. Must be able to function effectively in a naval-ship-work-environment, which may include aboard marine vessels, dry docks, confined spaces, and wearing personal protective gear.
