Job Description

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA, is looking for Repair Estimators at all levels to join the team. The Repair Estimator is responsible for creating detailed labor and material estimates for shipboard and shop work, as well as repairs on Government and Commercial vessels. This role incorporates a thorough assessment of costs using drawings, specifications, and on-site shipchecks to address potential interference and access issues. The position involves working closely with production supervisors, subcontractors, vendors, and customers in the development and scoping of estimates, playing a crucial role in the profitability and success of the company's repair work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop comprehensive cost estimates, factoring in all necessary labor and materials.
  • Abide by NASSCO's "Standards and Business Conduct."
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, quality, reducing cycle times, and cutting costs.
  • Decide on work item specification interpretation and inquire with customers for clarification when necessary.
  • Track ongoing work for feedback on estimating efforts utilizing cost reports, purchase orders, and direct observations.
  • Utilize computers to aid in the preparation and presentation of bids.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate with related college coursework preferred.
  • Knowledge of shipboard nomenclature and systems, including labor and material costs for repairs and maintenance.
  • Ability to make decisions regarding work item specifications and communicate with customers for specification clarification.
  • Proficient in tracking work and retrieving data from Labor Management System (LMS) and archives.
  • Competent with computer usage for storing information and assisting with bid creation.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb vertical ladders for ship inspections, bend, reach, and handle stressful situations.
  • Able to commute to various shipyard areas.
  • Occasional exposure to dust, welding/burning fumes, smoke, and varying noise levels including emergency signals, crane movement, and construction sounds.

Reporting: Reports to a Contracts Supervisor.
