Painter - Journeyman

Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO is seeking a skilled Painter - Journeyman in San Diego, CA, to clean and prepare surfaces of wood or metal for painting on interior and exterior parts of ships and shipyard buildings. The ideal candidate must have experience in hand brush and spray painting application and be well-versed in surface preparation procedures, paint mixing, and application standards. This position requires the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and to safely navigate on ships while maintaining a heightened awareness of safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Set up tools and equipment for surface preparation and painting tasks.
• Prepare surfaces for painting and ensure proper cleanliness.
• Operate spray paint equipment and hand paint designated areas as required.
• Mix paint materials according to Product Data Sheet (PDS) guidelines.
• Inspect painted areas for necessary touch-up work.
• Maintain cleanliness and order in all assigned work areas.
• Operate high-reach equipment for elevated painting tasks.
• Remove waste and conduct general cleaning upon task completion.
• Assist with interdepartmental tasks as needed, including erecting scaffold and compartment load-outs.

Qualifications:

• One to three years of hand brush and spray painting experience or SSPC C-12 Certification.
• Knowledge of surface preparation and paint mixing techniques.
• Ability to read and understand Product Data Sheets.
• Skilled in identifying painting application requirements and necessary equipment.
• Capable of working at heights and in confined spaces.
• Efficient in operating high-reach equipment.
• Good color discernment and attention to detail.
• Ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions and safety protocols.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

• Frequent carrying of painting equipment, with occasional heavy lifting.
• Regular standing, walking, reaching, as well as climbing, kneeling, and occasional awkward postures.
• Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, toxic chemicals, machine movements, and noise levels that may cause discomfort.
• Use of personal protective equipment is mandatory.
