Position Summary: General Dynamics NASSCO is seeking a Structural Shop Foreman for our Steel Shop located in Norfolk, Virginia. This key leadership position involves coordinating and supervising a team of skilled and semi-skilled workers, ensuring safety, quality, and adherence to schedules and budgets. The ideal candidate will demonstrate comprehensive knowledge in ship repair trade practices, proficiency in project planning, and possess strong leadership and team-building skills. With responsibilities that span across managing manpower resources, monitoring work progress, and driving continuous improvement, the Foreman serves as a pivotal role within the shipyard operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 8-20 mechanics, trainees, helpers, and subcontracted labor, ensuring safety, quality, schedule, and cost objectives are met.
  • Project manpower requirements and communicate needs to the General Foreman.
  • Develop and execute 1-2 week schedules for team members, reviewing progress with the General Foreman.
  • Assign daily work and set expectations for the production workforce.
  • Document and review employee performance, adhering to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Ensure safe and efficient work execution, following up on job sites to problem-solve and monitor progress.
  • Assign mechanics to jobs based on skill sets to maximize performance.
  • Supervise and ensure proper tooling, equipment, and resources for job completion.
  • Manage potential conflicts and inform the General Foreman of issues that may impact quality work within budget and schedule.
  • Conduct job inspections to guarantee trade quality standards are met.
  • Attend production meetings, coordinate with other shops, and address any issues to meet projected goals.
  • Monitor and address rework trends and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage workforce performance and implement corrective actions and disciplinary measures when necessary.
  • Ensure workforce compliance with company rules and manage absenteeism.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS with 2 years related experience, AA/AS with 4 years related experience, or High School Diploma/GED with 8 years shipbuilding/ship repair experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of ship repair and craftsmanship.
  • Working knowledge of contracting and estimating procedures.
  • Advanced understanding of production processes, methods, quality, and technology.
  • Proven leadership and team-building skills with effective communication capabilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to go on vessels, crawl, sit, and talk.
  • Regular site and ship traversal, including drydocks, with varying climates and conditions.
  • Must possess good eye/hand coordination and be able to work in noisy environments.
  • Ability to work in a naval-ship-work-environment, climb ladders, work in tanks and confined spaces, and wear personal protective equipment.
