Job Description

Position Summary: The Crane Operator at General Dynamics NASSCO located in San Diego, CA is responsible for operating various types of diesel-electric cranes including portal, tower, mobile (auxiliary), overhead (cab), and overhead (floor) cranes to lift and move heavy objects and machinery within the shipyard. This role requires responding to ground and radio signals, performing routine maintenance, inspecting equipment, and understanding loading charts and ship nomenclature. The successful candidate will place safety first and effectively communicate with team members to facilitate efficient shipyard operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate a variety of diesel-electric cranes to lift, lower, and transfer loads in the shipyard.
  • Set up machinery and equipment, ensuring proper boom lengths and configuration for lifts.
  • Rig machinery and materials in and out of ships.
  • Record operational data into log books.
  • Interpret load charts and assess different types of load materials and landing areas.
  • Inspect cranes for proper operation and address issues as needed.
  • Conduct pre and post-job inspections with or without supervision.
  • Engage in minor crane maintenance, including cleaning and basic repairs.
  • Train and mentor others in rigging functions and safe crane operations.
  • Additional tasks related to the trade as required.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of mechanical principles and crane operation.
  • Preferred: NCCCO License to operate Mobile Hydraulic Crane (All Terrain).
  • Preferred: Extensive Rigging experience.
  • Understanding of ship nomenclature and ability to navigate ship layouts.
  • Effective coordination of hand, foot, and eye movements.
  • Basic comprehension of weights and their conversions.
  • Knowledge of universal hand-signals for rigging and crane operations.
  • Clear communication abilities, especially through hand-held radios.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and across various shifts.
  • Proficient in written and verbal instruction comprehension.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Repetitive or prolonged sitting, climbing, balancing, and lifting.
  • Ability to lift body weight and perform various movements such as reaching, handling, standing, and walking.
  • Visual acuity to maintain contact with load and eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Work across all areas of the shipyard and onboard ships with general safety awareness.
  • Exposed to varying weather conditions, such as extreme temperature, wind, and rain.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment.
