Job Description

Position Summary:
The Firefighter at General Dynamics NASSCO is responsible for various emergency response activities, including medical aid, fire suppression, hazardous material containment, and rescue operations. They also contribute to fire prevention efforts and ensure adherence to local safety standards. This role requires readiness to respond to emergency situations and actively participate in training drills and equipment operation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage rapidly in fire and emergency calls, effectively utilizing firefighting techniques and equipment to carry out rescue operations.
  • Administer first aid and pre-fire planning as an initial medical responder.
  • Conduct fire prevention inspections and restock fire safety equipment, ensuring readiness.
  • Operate a variety of fire department vehicles and apparatus during emergency responses.
  • Maintain high standards of physical fitness and skill proficiency through regular drills and exercises.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of CSFM Firefighter 1 and a current CPAT or Biddle certification.
  • Proficiency in medical treatment protocols in accordance with San Diego protocols.
  • Knowledge of safety hazard recognition and experience with hazardous materials handling.
  • Ability to use computer software programs for reporting and communication tasks.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to endure the physically demanding nature of firefighting, rescue operations, and emergency medical interventions.
  • Capacity to wear heavy protective gear, climb ladders, carry hoses, and handle other firefighting equipment.
  • Flexibility to work in challenging environments, potentially involving heat, smoke, and confined spaces.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work occurs both in an outdoor shipyard setting and office environment, necessitating the versatility to perform under varied conditions.
  • The role demands agility, the ability to work at heights, in tight spaces, and under diverse climate conditions.

Reporting:

  • Firefighters report to the supervisory or managerial staff of the safety department.
