Job Description

Position Summary:
The Mate position at Curtin Maritime involves critical leadership and navigational responsibilities on tugboats, supporting the Captain and applying the company's core values of Efficiency, Innovation, and Integrity. The Mate will serve as an expert in operational standards, actively participating in voyage planning, crew training, and vessel management. With roles ranging from Mate I to III, the position's responsibilities and expectations grow with each level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Train and develop the crew in internal procedures to meet the Curtin Standard.
  • Assist with voyage planning and execution, emphasizing efficiency and safety.
  • Manage the crew regarding vessel maintenance, morale, and overall compliance.
  • Maintain the Vessel Management System, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
  • Provide expertise and support the Captain as directed in day-to-day operations.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • TWIC Card, Passport, and required maritime licenses for the Mate level, including a minimum of 200 GRT Near Coastal with Mate of Towing Vessels or 500 GRT Mate Near Coastal with TOAR.
  • VSO endorsement preferred along with Able Seaman and medical care provider certifications for higher Mate levels.
  • Proven ability to handle stressful situations, demonstrate responsibility, and offer mentorship.
  • Strong communication skills with the capability to plan and understand the mechanical and operational aspects of the vessel.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical dexterity to navigate uneven terrain, handle lines and equipment, and perform tasks in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds and perform emergency duties as required.

Work Environment:

  • Full-time position requiring attention to detail and the ability to maintain high organizational standards.
  • The role involves recommendations for improvement across various operations and training components.

Reporting:

  • Reports directly to the Vessel Captain and collaborates with the Port Captain and other crew members.

Compensation:
Competitive day rates: Mate I: $540/day, Mate II: $540 - $660/day, Mate III: $660 - $750/day. Includes a performance bonus and a benefits package with medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, and 401(k) with company match.
