Position Summary:
The Mate position at Curtin Maritime is a critical role requiring experienced individuals with strong leadership and navigational skills onboard tugboats. The Mate is entrusted with supervisory responsibilities, supporting the Captain in maintaining vessel operations and management according to the company's core values. The position encompasses levels I, II, and III, each with increasing responsibility and expertise.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Captain as directed and mentor crew members in internal procedures.
- Contribute to voyage planning and execution, with a focus on efficiency and safety.
- Handle crew management and vessel maintenance, ensuring compliance and upholding the Curtin Standard.
- Train and develop the crew in Curtin's procedures and systems, encouraging high morale and successful operations.
- Manage compliance with the Vessel Management System (VMS) and maintain accurate records and reports.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum 200 GRT Master of Towing Vessels Near Coastal or 500 GRT Mate Near Coastal with TOAR required, along with a valid Passport and VSO credentials.
- Proficiency in various maritime skills, including inland and coastwise towing, as well as more advanced navigation for higher-level positions.
- Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to handle stressful and potentially hazardous situations effectively.
- Superior communication abilities and the understanding of mentoring roles within maritime operations.
Physical Requirements:
- Capability to traverse uneven ground, frequent climbing, stooping, squatting, and lifting at least 40 pounds.
- Ability to perform emergency duties onboard the vessel and work in confined or potentially dark below-deck areas.

Reporting:
- The Mate reports directly to the Vessel Captain and collaborates closely with the Port Captain and other crew members.

Compensation:
