Position Summary:
The Experienced Tugboat Captain at Curtin Maritime is a critical leadership position responsible for ensuring safe, efficient maritime towing and navigating. The role is key to upholding company's high standards and core values: efficiency, innovation, and integrity. Captains in levels I, II, and III demonstrate a mastery of vessel operations, maintenance, and crew management and provide training and mentorship onboard.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and execute inland, coastwise, and ocean towing; voyage planning; and navigation.
  • Utilize equipment properly, including tow pins, surge chains, and rigging, and oversee compliance with regulations.
  • Provide advanced crew management, offer feedback for performance improvement, and complete evaluations.
  • Lead ocean towing arrangements, barge rigging, conduct strategic operations planning, and anchor handling.
  • Pathfinder for new jobs, leading crews in safe route identification, SOPs, and crew training.
  • Maintain impeccable recordkeeping and thorough utilization of Vessel Management Systems (VMS).

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum valid 200 GRT Master of Towing Vessels Near Coastal, with 500 GRT Master Near Coastal w/ TOAR preferred.
  • STCW certifications, with Master 500 GT Near Coastal and Oceans endorsement for higher-level positions.
  • Proficient in operation of VMS and knowledgeable in Sub-M, ABS, and USCG regulations.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with clear decision-making skills under potentially dangerous conditions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically fit to handle equipment, traverse uneven ground, work in confined spaces, and lift at least 40 pounds safely.
  • Capable of performing emergency duties and using emergency equipment onboard the vessel.

Work Environment:

  • Remote position requiring significant travel to various sites.
  • Full-time, following a rotational schedule that includes potential for stress and requiring strategic planning for vessel and crew management.

Reporting:

  • Direct reports will vary based on project and company structure but typically includes reporting to the Port Captain.

Long Beach, California (Remote with required travel)

Compensation:

  • Competitive daily rates: Captain I: $625 - $750/day, Captain II: $625 - $870/day, Captain III: $725 - $1080/day, inclusive of performance bonuses and a benefits package with medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, and a 401(k) with company match.
