Position Summary:
The Experienced Dredge Tugboat Captain position at Curtin Maritime is a leadership role for individuals with a demonstrated background in maritime navigation and dredging operations. Captains at levels I, II, and III are tasked with the safe, efficient guidance of towing operations and vessel command, applying the company's core values of innovation, integrity, and efficiency. The captains must possess strong management skills and the aptitude to act as a mentor, training and developing crew members while maintaining the Curtin Standard onboard.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct inland and coastwise towing, voyage planning, and navigation.
- Utilize various vessel tools and equipment properly, and oversee compliance with regulations.
- Manage vessel operations, including voyage preparation, anchor handling, and rigging for towing and bar crossings.
- Maintain accountability over vessels, assign projects, and ensure thorough recordkeeping.
- Lead by example, provide crew management, and conduct performance evaluations.
- Act as a Pathfinder for new jobs, identifying safe routes, creating standard operating procedures, and planning advanced towing configurations.
- Oversee the tow of any boat, anywhere in the world, with any crew, exemplifying the company's standards.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in dredging with a Master of Towing Vessels Near Coastal or 500 GRT Master Near Coastal w/ TOAR.
- STCW certifications, including Med PIC and Oceans endorsements, are desirable for higher-level positions.
- Proficiency in operations of Vessel Management Systems (VMS) and understanding of Sub-M, ABS, and USCG requirements.
- Ability to think clearly under stress, make informed decisions during emergencies, and provide effective leadership onboard the vessel.
Physical Requirements:
- Agility to traverse uneven ground and to walk at various heights, with the ability to lift at least 40 pounds safely.
- Must pass a "fit for duty" examination, including a pre-employment physical and drug test.
Work Environment:
- The full-time position with significant time away from home, following a rotating schedule of 4 weeks on/4 weeks off.
- Involves travel to various project sites and may require work in difficult and varying weather conditions.
Reporting:
- Directly reports to the Port Captain and collaborates with shoreside teams for project coordination.

Varies – Nationwide travel with a base in Long Beach, California
Compensation:
- Competitive day rates: Captain I: $750/day, Captain II: $750 - $850/day, Captain III: $850 - $1100/day, inclusive of performance bonuses, with a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, and a 401(k) with company match.
