Position Summary:
The Experienced Dredge Tugboat Captain at Curtin Maritime holds a leadership position focused on navigation and the safe operation of the vessel. Commanding a wide array of towing and marine transportation tasks, the captain utilizes expertise to maintain the Curtin Standard of performance. Providing mentorship, superior communication, and expert navigational skills are paramount within this role, which varies across three levels of Captain I, II, and III.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and execute inland and coastwise towing, voyage planning, and ensure proactive planning for operational efficiency.
  • Manage vessel compliance using the Vessel Management System (VMS) and maintain thorough recordkeeping.
  • Supervise and lead crews, assign projects, and hold team members accountable for performance, providing feedback as necessary.
  • Engage in anchor handling, ocean towing, tandem towing, and ocean voyage preparation, including rigging barges for tow.
  • Lead crews through audits and inspections, attend pre-sailing and safety meetings, and maintain & train others in the use of the VMS.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum 200 GRT Master of Towing Vessels Near Coastal or equivalent with Passport, and VSO credentials.
  • At least 5 years of experience in dredging with a strong preference for those who have been tugboat Masters.
  • STCW and other maritime certifications as appropriate to the level of Captain role.
  • Comprehensive understanding of towing and rigging procedures, including advanced techniques for higher-level Captain positions.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, logistical, and mechanical reasoning skills, with an emphasis on safety and mentoring abilities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities including lifting at least 40 pounds, walking on uneven ground, and working in confined spaces.
  • Fit for duty as confirmed by pre-employment physical and drug testing.

Work Environment:

  • Full-time position requiring significant time away from home on a rotating schedule of 4 weeks on/4 weeks off. Travel to various project sites is required.
  • The role involves exposure to various environmental conditions and potential emergency situations.

Reporting:

  • Directly reports to the Port Captain and VP of Dredging.

Location:
Varies - Position requires travel, based in Jacksonville, Florida

Compensation:

  • Competitive day rates (Captain I: $750/day, Captain II: $750 - $850/day, Captain III: $850 - $1100/day), inclusive of performance bonuses, with generous benefits including medical, dental, vision, STD, AD&D/Life Insurance, and 401(k) with company match.
