Position Summary:
The Dredge Captain at Curtin Maritime is instrumental in directing dredging operations, crew management, and maintenance of the dredge. Collaborating with the project manager and shoreside staff, this position ensures that daily operations drive project goals efficiently and safely. The Dredge Captain is accountable for the performance of the dredge and its crew, providing leadership in safety, operations, and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead mobilization and demobilization for dredging projects, ensuring the critical path, resource planning, and equipment preparedness.
  • Coordinate site logistics to optimize safe and efficient operations including vessel, crew, and scow scheduling.
  • Develop and streamline dredging operations, fostering a critical thinking environment focused on safety and production.
  • Comply with regulations concerning dredge operation and manage all aspects of dredge maintenance and repair.
  • Maintain inventory of critical spares and consumables and log essentials like fuels and potable water for dredge operations.
  • Handle Health, Safety, and Environmental compliance, lead daily safety meetings, and conduct JSAs or AHAs as necessary.
  • Direct the purchasing function for the dredge, maintain VMS, coordinate with governmental inspections, and supervise during maintenance periods.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to crew members, including setting work plans, training, evaluations, and addressing concerns.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • NCCCO LBC (Lattice Boom Crawler) Certification and MMC Ordinary Seaman (preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of dredging specifications and operations with capability to foresee work sequence conflicts.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and project management skills.
  • Proactive and able to independently manage projects with minimal oversight.
  • Proficiency in multitasking within a dynamic environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.
  • Ability to navigate uneven surfaces, climb ladders/stairs, work in confined spaces, and withstand various weather conditions.

Work Environment:

  • The role is full-time with a rotational schedule of 4 weeks on/4 weeks off.
  • Requires the capability to work outside and onboard vessels, with exposure to diverse weather conditions and operational environments.

Reporting:

  • Reports directly to the VP of Dredging.

Location:
Varies - The position may require nationwide travel with a base in Long Beach, California
