Job Description

Position Summary: The Pipe Welder is a proficient tradesperson within the shipyard, focusing on the critical task of welding piping systems integral to the operation of marine vessels. This role demands expertise in fusing various metals, such as steel and copper-nickel, and ensuring seamless connections for systems that transport water, fuel, and hydraulic fluids.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Weld various types of pipes, including stainless steel and copper-nickel, using techniques such as TIG, MIG, and stick welding.
  • Interpret blueprints and schematics to accurately position and secure pipes before welding.
  • Ensure that each weld meets specific standards and is properly inspected for quality and safety.
  • Collaborate with other members of the construction team to ensure that workflows proceed smoothly and according to plan.
  • Maintain equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition, adhering to safety protocols at all times.
  • Address challenges presented by tight spaces or complex pipe routing with skill and precision.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with additional certification or apprenticeship training in pipe welding highly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in pipe welding, preferably in a shipyard or marine environment.
  • Proficient in welding methods such as TIG, MIG, and stick, and capable of passing welding performance qualification tests.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex blueprints and engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of marine standards and safety procedures related to the welding of fluid-carrying systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and dedication to producing high-quality welds.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • The shipyard environment is dynamic, requiring indoor and outdoor work, often in confined spaces, and sometimes at heights or in awkward positions.
  • Physical demands include prolonged periods of standing, bending, kneeling, and the lifting of materials and tools.
  • Use of appropriate personal protective gear and adherence to strict safety protocols are mandatory.

Reporting:

  • Reports to the Pipe Welding Foreman or directly to the Shipyard Supervisor.
