Job Description

Position Summary: The Structural Welder specializes in the assembly of large metal components for shipbuilding, skillfully welding steel plates and structural frames to form the ship's primary architecture. Precision and adherence to detailed blueprints are critical in this role, as is the commitment to rigorous safety standards, often working within confined areas or at elevations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform welding tasks to join large steel plates and structural components according to blueprints and ship design plans.
  • Utilize various welding techniques and tools to ensure strong and accurate welds that meet construction specifications.
  • Inspect welds for quality assurance, identifying any defects and making necessary adjustments.
  • Collaborate with other tradespeople and supervisors to ensure that work is completed efficiently and safely.
  • Follow strict safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safe work practices, especially when working at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Maintain and care for welding equipment and tools, ensuring they are in proper working order.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED, with formal training through a vocational school or apprenticeship program preferred.
  • Certification in welding, with specific qualifications in structural welding techniques.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a structural welder, ideally within the shipbuilding industry.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints and structural welding diagrams.
  • Solid understanding of various welding processes, including MIG, TIG, and stick welding.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in physically demanding environments.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work will be primarily conducted at the shipyard, necessitating flexibility to work outdoors in diverse weather conditions, at heights, and within confined spaces.
  • Physical capacity to handle materials, operate welding equipment, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment and possibly carry loads up to 50 pounds.

Reporting:

  • Reports directly to the Lead Welder or Welding Supervisor.
