Job Description

Position Summary: A Pipe Fitter is crucial in a shipyard environment for the accurate arrangement and preparation of piping systems. They ensure each component and joint aligns precisely with the system's specifications before welding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately fit pipe, plate, and steel components in preparation for welding, adhering to system specifications.
  • Read and interpret schematic diagrams and blueprints to determine the layout for pipe/plate systems.
  • Use various hand and power tools to measure, cut, thread, and assemble pipes and fittings.
  • Assess and plan sequence of installation to optimize workflow and safety on site.
  • Inspect workpieces and equipment to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Coordinate with welders to facilitate efficient and high-quality joint completion.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; additional coursework or certification in pipefitting is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Pipe Fitter, preferably in a marine or industrial setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of tools, materials, and methods involved in pipe/plate fitting.
  • Ability to read and understand technical blueprints and schematics.
  • Strong mathematical skills for precise measurements and calculations.
  • Physical strength and stamina for heavy lifting and operating in various work environments.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Shipyard work often requires operating in varied conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Continuous standing, bending, lifting (up to 50 pounds), and maneuvering in confined areas.
  • May involve exposure to loud noise, welding fumes, and outdoor weather conditions.

Reporting:

  • Reports to the Pipe Fitting Foreman or Department Supervisor.
