Job Description
Position Summary: The Structural Fitter is instrumental in the construction and repair of pipe and plate systems used in marine vessel fabrication. This skilled individual collaborates with a team to achieve precise assembly and installation of structural components, ensuring that every joint is welding-ready according to system requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the layout, fabrication, installation, testing, and repair of various pipe and plate systems.
- Ensure precise fitting of pipe and plate components, preparing joints meticulously for welding.
- Read and interpret blueprints, while also creating detailed sketches to guide fabrication.
- Calculate offsets and complex bends, demonstrating expertise in marine structural assembly.
- Oversee the work of assigned tacker(s), ensuring quality control and efficient workflow.
- Contribute to broader ship construction tasks, demonstrating versatility and attention to detail.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification from a vocational school or apprenticeship program is beneficial.
- Minimum of 4 years' experience in structural fitting, pipefitting, or a closely related field within a shipyard environment.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints and creating precise fabrication sketches.
- Advanced understanding of layout and fitting techniques for complex pipe/plate systems.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others effectively.
- Commitment to upholding safety standards and quality control measures.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Position involves work within a bustling shipyard, both indoors and outdoors.
- Must be capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects, climbing, working in confined spaces, and standing for extended periods.
- Often required to operate under a variety of weather conditions.
Reporting:
- Directly reports to the Foreman or Shift Supervisor in the structural department.
